Mohammad-Jafar Pouyandeh was a prominent Iranian writer and translator, known for his significant contributions to Iranian intellectual life through his translations of critical Frankfurt School texts. He was also an active member of the Iranian Writers' Association. In December 1998, Pouyandeh became a victim of the state-sponsored Chain Murders, a series of assassinations targeting intellectuals and dissidents. He was kidnapped on December 9, 1998, after leaving his home in Tehran. Ten days later, his body was discovered in Badamak village, Shahriar. He was killed by injection as part of these targeted killings. Reports indicate that days before his death, individuals described as "brothers" had visited his bookstore and photographed him, a chilling prelude to his murder.
